"I experiment with different elements. Nature is a powerful tool for me & helps in the expression of vivid colour & organic form. Every material has its potential." Inspired by ancient stones such as Egyptian porphyry, Tibetan turquoise, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan and 'Venus Hair' stone from Madagascar, Francesca Bristol’s metal work is instantly recognizeable by the monumentally sized stones that she carves into and sets into solid tactile shapes. Her silver pieces are based on the instinct for self defence: sting ray skin that is dyed blood red, ivory, blue and sea-green is set into silver pendants shaped like ancient spear-heads and bound with silver wire; large pendants in lapis and malachite are sculpted like medieval armour to resemble belly buttons, & spike rings, pendants and cuffs scare off would-be aggressors. In addition to her silver range Francesca Bristol creates futuristic bracelets and collar necklaces from brightly coloured acrylic. Often set with dried leaves or peacock feathers – all dyed multi-colours, the shapes are often taken from moulds of her silver work. Originally inspired by traditional Javanese ornaments and craft skills 'her designs have matured' (to quote Vivienne Becker: Harpers & Queen)' – their ethnic and tribal derivation polished by urban dynamism.' Francesca Bristol's work attracts a following who not only want her work for its wearability but also because when not being worn they are striking sculptural objects. Collected for many years by a strong show-business and rock contingent in the UK and USA, the appeal of her work is starting to reach a wider audience of professional women who admire the originality and imagination of these remarkable pieces that succeed in combining something of both the elemental and the modern. Her work was recently selected by the V&A for their 'Touch Me' exhibition. |
