Vermeil, also known as silver gilt, is a combination of gold and sterling silver, commonly used as a component in jewellery and used to accentuate detail. To be considered as vermeil, the gold used must be at least 10ct and measure a layer of at least 1.5 micrometers.

The original process of fire-gilding was developed in France in the 18th century, and involved the use of mercury, which over time caused the craftsmen to go blind. Today, vermeil is safely created through the process of electrolysis.

Vermeil combines the look and feel of gold but with the affordability of silver. However over time the plating can fade and need redoing to return to the original look.
