Piercing and sawing cut outs are closely related, and the origins of the saws used to do this date back to the Neolithic Age. Sawing and piercing is used either for decorative purposes or to fit another metal into the interior of the one being worked. The saws used in this process can cut the majority of metals, and today’s design is closely related to one developed by the Romans. Sarah Hutchison is an accomplished goldsmith who loves to incorporate sawing into many of her designs in silverware and jewellery to dramatic effect.
